BE THE BEST
Photography: Jack Boothby
I’m here today with a touch of Monday Motivation, about how you can be the best version of yourself at work with a few simple steps. I love working, I probably spend 7 days a week working somehow, whether that be marketing, blogging or freelancing. Being a self-confessed workaholic comes with some practice, and today I’m talking about simple steps to make your working life smooth and successful. Successful meaning you can make the most out of every opportunity, and make the best impression so you can fly up the career ladder, earn respect from your employer and look incredibly dapper doing so.
While we’re talking about looking dapper, I wish I could wear an outfit like this every day! I’m head to toe Remus Uomo that’s stocked at Psyche Fashion online and in store, so be sure to head down to their concession on Linthorpe Road. A bit more about the outfit later, but without further ado let’s begin.
Listen and Learn
To start this off, the biggest bit of advice I could give someone is to listen and learn. If you’re like me, the longer you stay doing the same thing the more bored you’ll get of doing it. But in real life, that doesn’t mean we can jump from job to job, so the solution is keeping yourself engaged and motivated. How do you do that? Well, I’m one of those people who love to learn – constantly improving my own skill set and observing what other people around me are doing. Stick close to the people who inspire you, and listen to what they have to say. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and always be willing to learn. I’ve learnt more by listening and learning from the people around me, than any textbook, lecture or course. Those people around you are valuable, so keep them close.
Express A Positive Attitude
You don’t want to be known as the Moaning Myrtle of the office, so, therefore, express a positive attitude. That doesn’t mean walking around with a smile ear to ear the entire day, but have a ‘cup half full’ outlook. I’m all for empowerment, and kicking-ass at work – so I always strive to be really enthusiastic about what I do and to whoever I’m talking to. A positive attitude also rubs off onto people very easily, and if your colleagues absorb these vibes it will be a much better working environment.
Always Dress To Impress
Dress to impress is a motto I totally live by. When you look your best, you instantly feel better about what you’re doing. You feel confident and ready for business. My go-to brand for semi-formal/formal outfits is Remus Uomo, stocked at Psyche Fashion in Middlesbrough. I regularly go down to the Remus Uomo concession at Psyche, to plan new outfits and find timeless staples for my formal wardrobe. I’m loving this Slim Fit Grey Jacket at the moment, paired with this Merino Woll Black Sweater, Checked Trousers and Leather Sneaker. It’s a slightly different take on the usual business look, but that’s what I like. It’s comfortable, wearable and I’ve had so many compliments wearing it. We’re in a new era of business, so let’s dress for it!
Understand Who You Work For
One of the most important things is to understand who you work for, meaning the company itself and who is running it. Know their business goals, objectives and what their ultimate mission is. Then, know how your own boss works, manages and what his/her expectations are of you are. When you’ve identified this you’ll know exactly what the company and your boss expects from you. It sounds like a pretty obvious one, but many opportunities and accomplishments in my career have come because of this simple tip. You’ll earn trust, respect and a great relationship if you put this into practice.
Be The Solution
You can either be one of two people. Moan about the problems about your job/work, or be the problem solver that everyone wants to see. There’s no harm in identifying issues or problems, but provide the solution that the powers above will want to hear. By doing this, you’ll instantly get the other persons attention, brownie points and recognition for being proactive and using your initiative. It’s also a way to stand out. It’s a dog eat dog world, so providing the solutions and ideas for your team to grow, will help you grow too. But one tip, don’t appear arrogant or step on anyones toes and most importantly, don’t put all your cards on the table, keep some to your chest.
Finally, ALWAYS stay organised. When I get to work each day, I sort all of my emails and write a to-do list of what has to be done. Working through the list keeps me efficient, organised and ensures all deadlines are met. Your inbox should only contain emails that need to be actioned, the rest organised into the relevant folders. I also like to work at a clean desk. I try to be as paperless as possible, just a simple notebook. No dirty cups, plates or unnecessary rubbish surrounding my workspace. It all goes back to the quote “tidy home, tidy mind” and it sure does work.
I hope these few tips have inspired you to be the best version of yourself at work, I’d love to know what your tips are!
