As we all know being a university student does come with a lot of drawbacks, huge amount of debt, exams, assignments, constantly skint and sometimes can be a little confusing. Yes, its always advertised as having “the student life” living away from home with your own freedom but it isn’t all that easy.
I made the decision of staying home and studying which at first I was really scared about, a lot of my friends were moving away and because everyone had bigged up the student life moving away, I felt as though I was missing out… a lot. Until university actually came around.
For those of you who don’t know I’m studying Marketing at Teesside University, and I must say, I love it! Not only have I got some great people on my course, over the last few months I have noticed some of the things I already had I took for granted before I had the decision of moving away or staying at home.
Firstly, my debt would be double the amount I have to pay back now if i moved away! Moving to university is very expensive, one of my friends who moved to Teesside has just had to give away her whole maintenance loan, just to cover accommodation next year! Talking about maintenance loan, staying at home means I can keep it all for myself to spend on what I want which I wouldn’t be able to do if I moved away!
Secondly, I can keep my car! There would be no way I could afford to keep my car and move away to university. Staying here means I can comfortably run my car and drive to uni and back every day. This leads on to public transport. Public transport is something I really dislike, and moving away would mean it would be something I have to rely on.
Im also glad I stayed at home as I get to sleep every night in my comfy bed in the silence and safety of my house, and not struggling to sleep in a noisy halls of residence, with students banging above and below my bedroom. It also means I have all my belongings here and I can comfortably live.
And lastly on my list, my job. Staying at home means I can keep the job I’ve been in for 2 years. This also means that I don’t have to spend the money I earn on living as I would at university (thats if I could even find a job wherever I moved).
So thats my list of reasons why I’m very happy staying at home! It might seem like I’m belittling the choice of moving away which I’m not because I can imagine there are many reasons why moving away is a great choice, for which it will for some people. But I can say I have no regrets staying at home! So there you go guys, I hope this has inspired some of you who may be in the decision process I was in this time last year and made your decision a little easier.
